Portable Media Expo Day 1

Woo. Well, after a few days over in Boston to hook up some more development firepower for the site and check out our great new offices in Cambridge, I am now right over the other side of the USA in Ontario California for the second Portable Media Expo.

LOADS of people here – and so many that I coulnd’t even get in to the first keynote from Leo Laporte. It’s a shame they have no ‘break-out’ screen to let thse who the fire marshall won’t let in be able to listen or watch.

So, I’m now sat here in the ballroom listening to the Ron Moore who produced the Battlestar Galactica podcasts. Pretty entertaining. Hey! Just realised I’m sat next to Don McAllister from ScreenCastsOnline, who I’ve met in London a few times. Small world. HUGE medium.

Looking forward to seeing the exhibits and networking with people I have either met before, or emailed in the past, Skyped with or never met at all.

No sign of Apple. Heh. 🙂

Mobile Top Level Madness!!!! 1666622444 !!!!

What’s that number? Well, that’s the TEN (count ’em) mobile keyboard button pushes that will be required for simply typing the END of the url!!!!

Who even thinks these things up? At least .WAP was a simple ‘1927’ – let me guess, it wasn’t a european who came up with this .mobi top level domain – they(we)’ve used mobiles for a hell of a lot longer for mobile sites and data access.

I’m sorry, but though I like the idea of a mobile TLD, but to have to hit my keyboard TEN TIMES to type in the just the last past of a mobi url is just ‘3338822255444664022277729999999‘!!!!

News links on this : BBC GigaOM

Could this be the future of cyber/meta-journalism? ;p

Wow! Check this. Rikomatic reports on that “The Knight Foundation recently announced that they are launching a new $5 million fund for innovative community journalism in cyberspace

HUDs to the ready! :))

I wonder what the entry limitations are? For example, is this a ‘global’ offer outside the USA?

Whatever it is, and whoever’s ideas they enable, this is a GOOOOD thing. 😉

Something really cool happened while building the blogHUD

Since knocking together this little site and HUD system, it strikes me that something really cool is happening. I somehow feel more ‘connected’ with people. It’s a great feeling and I wonder how many other HUDslingers feel the same.

As the posts go by on, and also on Tao Takashi’s, from RL I can watch the news and stories of experiences or issues just keep on coming. I love it!

It’s a ‘River of Life’ – teaming with RSS. I get to connect with people who share my passion for virtual worlds, coding, creativity and innovation. Priceless.

Also, there was this magical feeling when I got my head round learning how to connect to other blogging systems – something I had avoided doing for ages – and realising what could happen here. I know I’m not alone in doing this process too, btw. There are all these SL blogs out there , where the authors have to leave SL and go to post back in RL. Surely, that must be a pain. You might lose the moment of inspiration which triggered you to post in the first place.

So, I have to say it was incredibly cool to just get more support for external blogs working. Cool because there are people out there, already posting about SL, on their own blogs, hosted on their own servers, who can now say something in SL and have it suddenly appear on their RL blog.  When you try it – and you see that first post, I think you’ll see what i mean about that magical feeling! 🙂

Happy HUDslingin’! 🙂

Explaining RSS the Oprah way

Just spotted this great post about explaining RSS to your mum, dad, etc 😉

Good stuff!

OK! Self-hosted WordPress support has been added!

When you log into and access your member profile (by clicking your name at the top of page) and go to add your external blogs, you will be asked for the url to your WordPress blog, when you select the WordPress type.

No need to add http:// when you enter the url. And please enter the full url to your WP blog, even if it is not in your webroot folder. eg:

Please let me know by commenting on this post if you have any issues.

Once this is fixed up, it will be Movable Type for the HUD! yay!

I also got my question asked regarding the inworld browser. I think we could have them on HUD surfaces first. Philip thinks this is a good idea. *Fingers crossed*

Who is this ‘kosso’ anyway?

I am a 'Createc'. A creative technologist, entrepreneur/ hacker/ geek. Worked on building things on the web for over 12 years.

Used to work at BBC News interactive and created the publishing and delivery systems for video news to get distributed on huge screens in major railway stations around the country.

I left the BBC to become CTO / sole-lead architect/developer at for three years.

I have now left them to build a start up a new system called 'Phreadz', which is a 'Social Multimedia Conversation Network', integrating everything that is 'V.I.T.A.L' to us on the web. Video, Images, Text, Audio and Links.

I built the whole thing my myself. I programmed every line of code and positioned every pixel. I'm looking forward to attracting an hiring new members of the team to help me out! :)

There are currently over 1000 happy and helpful beta testers on the system so far and one client of a white-labelled solution.
