The Well-Formed Web?

With well formed data, there’s no reason why not. 😉

Now, can we please work out the right way to *do* OPML please?

Basically:

If you want to point to a WEBSITE: use type=link and url=http://your.web.site.com

If you want to point to an RSS feed use type=rss and xmlUrl=htt://www.your.rss.feed.com/rss.xml

If you want to point to MORE OPML use type=include and url=http://www.you.opml.file.com/hoopla.opml

OK. So, you could argue that there might be better ways of doing/specifying it.
And what about htmlUrl, opmlUrl, atomUrl, foafUrl, rdfUrl, type=rdf, type=atom, type=application/pdf or whatever… I don’t know. Just DOCUMENT how you do it.

But what I do know is the sooner we agree and what is the right way to ‘do it’ – the better. 😀

IMHO.

Hey! Is my OPML Icon out of date?? :p

Are Apple rewriting your podcast MP3 ID3 tags??

On today’s Daily Source Code, Adam Curry mentions that when a podcast gets downloaded and synced through iTunes, Apple are rewriting the ID3 tags in the MP3 file – editing it and replacing some fields with info from the RSS feed.

WTF?? – Was my initial reaction. But I do wonder what people think about this, if it;s true. It’s clearly just as bad as the feed manipulation Podshow were seen to be doing.

At least poshow fixed it. I doubt Apple will.

What do YOU think?

Apple still make it impossible to copy and paste a podcast RSS feed (hidden behind the ‘i’ icon, AFTER you susbscribe using iTunes) so you can subscribe using a different reader. I suppose the only thing to do is use another podcast feed reader (podcatcher).
The KoolAid effect around the iPod is staggering. No one who owns one has any idea how the rest of the world without an iPod or iTunes is doing things. It’s like AOL’s early walled garden kidding users that there was not a world wide web out there. So many people think that to get podcasts, they need an iPod. So many people are forced into using iTunes, which is one of the worst bits of software I have ever been forced to use. I mean it.

I got an iPod to just see for myself what all the fuss is about. Sure, I too can get swept off my feet my a lovely, well-built gadget but the user experience with iTunes and the iPod has been awful. I wonder if it would be different if I didn’t know as much as I do about the alternatives and freedom available.

I’m amazed Steve Jobs didn’t announce an iPadlock at yesterday’s WWDC. Foolproof lockin for the masses.

I do love my MacBookPro though. Can’t wait for the winter. Mmmm, toasty. 😉

Canada Podcast OPML

I noticed that the OPML created for the Canada Podcasts out there has alot of easy to fix mistakes (and a few custom tags, which is fine). Maybe Bob Goyeche (listed as the author) would like to drop me a line, so we can sort it all out properly. 🙂

Try entering the URL for that OPML into an early OPML manager I created – then hit load. It all looks fine, until you realise that the OPML thinks each link to a feed is a ‘link’ to more OPML and not the type ‘RSS’ with xmlUrl to the feed, as it should be.

Here’s an audio message I made a while ago about this.

The ‘DaveSite‘ which Mr. Winer points to is not all that useful as it stands – this is because it is simply linking to the RSS xml feeds and displaying those. That upsets lots of people, who don’t know what they are looking at. Not only that, but David seems to insist on linking to OPML AND RSS with the same icon. Bad idea imho. Sure it is XML, but that orange button has meant ‘RSS’ for so many, for so long – it’s confusing to link to OPML with (even though is is just XML). I always wandered if he had promoted an orange icon saying ‘RSS’, maybe people wouldn’t be so confused about RSS and ‘feeds’ as they are now. (Almost) EVERYONE adopted the old orange button – now they use a generic ‘feed’ icon.

I will have a bash at cleaning up that Canadian OPML and trying a test import.

UPDATE: I fixed the Canada OPML to comply with the spec – though I left the custin tags in there.

You can find it here : http://podcast.com/opml/canada_fixed.opml

See the comments in the OPML for what I did.

Now it works perfectly, as people will expect. 🙂 Try entering the new URL into my OPML manager – now you can RSS feeds! Yes!! (It is also in the drop down list on that Flash app)

Podshow Texas Hold-Em Jack Lette Ching$$

I see the the podshow stable of sites (poshow, podcastalley, etc) have started to show ads for Casino / Poker / Roulette, etc sites. I have heard that the gambling sites pay the best for ads, but I bet quite a few people will get turned off because of them. Hardly relevant and totally obtrusive. imho.

Who is this ‘kosso’ anyway?

I am a 'Createc'. A creative technologist, entrepreneur/ hacker/ geek. Worked on building things on the web for over 12 years.

Used to work at BBC News interactive and created the publishing and delivery systems for video news to get distributed on huge screens in major railway stations around the country.

I left the BBC to become CTO / sole-lead architect/developer at podcast.com for three years.

I have now left them to build a start up a new system called 'Phreadz', which is a 'Social Multimedia Conversation Network', integrating everything that is 'V.I.T.A.L' to us on the web. Video, Images, Text, Audio and Links.

I built the whole thing my myself. I programmed every line of code and positioned every pixel. I'm looking forward to attracting an hiring new members of the team to help me out! :)

There are currently over 1000 happy and helpful beta testers on the system so far and one client of a white-labelled solution.
